What is adventure travel?

Today I hoped to bring a little more understanding to this topic of adventure travel. You don’t necessarily have to jump out of an airplane or summit Mount Everest to become part of the Clemente Travels community, so let’s dive right in!

According to the U.S.-based Adventure Travel Trade Association, adventure travel may be any tourist activity, including two of the following three components: a physical activity, a cultural exchange or interaction, and engagement with nature. While this could mean mountaineering, bungee jumping, scuba diving, and zip-lining, it also can refer to softer activities such as bird-watching, canoeing, sailing, or horseback riding.

The main gist is that there are different adventures for everyone. While I might enjoy a hike or bike ride through the city of Bilbao, one of my best friends just spent two months cliff diving around France- not my cup of tea. It does not have set boundaries with age, location, or physical limit. Whatever your limit, there is an activity out there for you. The easiest way I like to think about it is this: a family loves going on hikes around their state. Instead of a week in a local cabin, maybe they head to Italy for a summer to remember. They can spend the time kayaking, sailing, or hiking on the Amalfi Coast. When we biked around Bilbao, we loved the tips and stories told by our local guide. It was a two-for-one deal, the cultural exchange and afternoon outside by the coast. That same family could then enjoy a pasta-making course while they recharge the next day.

Another idea for a great expedition is the country of Ireland. Whether solo, couple, group or family: Ireland is one big playground waiting for you! There are great family trips like the Cliffs of Moher and hikes through Killarney National Park. One example is the Torc Waterfall loop- a 2.3-mile loop rated as easy on AllTrails. We saw multiple families on it when spending the day driving the ring of Kerry in April. Heading north, travelers will find The Giant’s Causeway- 40,000 interlocking basalt columns. The hiking and exploring last all day here! I could go on about this experience for ages, so I’ll leave you waiting for an additional post with further details.

Adventure travel can be what you make out of it, so where will it take you? I encourage you to brainstorm some ways you can get out of the box and the norm of your typical family vacation. Feel free to share them below.

Happy Travels, Hannah
