8 Fantastic Books to Inspire Wanderlust
As I was heading off for my family vacation in June, my sister-in-law asked, “So, how many books are you planning to pack this year?” Considering I brought somewhere near five in years past, I cracked up. Therefore, it was only fitting to share some of the reads that have transported me to different countries and times!
Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster - Jon Krakauer
This book gave me chills.
Perfect for any suspense lover or serious sports enthusiast, this personal account details the deadliest season in the history of Mount Everest. When Jon Krakauer reached the summit of Mount Everest in the early afternoon of May 10, 1996, he hadn't slept in fifty-seven hours and was reeling from the brain-altering effects of oxygen depletion. It will somehow have you both shaking your head at events occurring while looking to start mountaineering.
Ten Years a Nomad: A Traveler's Journey Home - Matthew Kepnes
Close friends will know that Matt Kepnes, aka “Nomadic Matt,” is one of the first people I ever found when getting into travel. It was, therefore, perfectly fitting to include his latest book on today’s list. After exploring the world for ten years, Matt arrives home and reflects on his favorite memories, experiences, and insights abroad. Great for travel junkies and anyone looking to get into long-term travel.
Clan Lands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other - Sam Heughan & Graham McTavish
Calling all my Outlander lovers, this one is for you! Two of the show’s leading men find themselves in Scotland for an adventure of a lifetime. They travel from coast to coast, diving into history and culture while reflecting on their careers. You have to love both the banter and tales throughout the book.
P.S. This has also become a show; pop over to Showtime to check it out!
In a Sunburned Country - Bill Bryson
An oldie but goodie compared to others on the list, this bestselling author recounts his tales of time spent in Australia. Although the land features many animals that want to kill you, you will be dreaming of the beaches, friendly locals, and adventures at every corner. Filled with both facts and funny recounts, this is sure to brighten your week!
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail - Cheryl Strayed
After losing everything, author Cheryl Strayed makes an impulsive decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State. She describes the ups and downs of her journey that ultimately helped piece her back together.
The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream - Paulo Coelho
It’s a classic for a reason! This short yet mighty story is about an Andalusian shepherd boy who has a desire to travel. Plagued by a dream to find a worldly treasure in Egypt, this story takes us through his adventures in search of it when fate leads him to The Alchemist.
The Happiness of Pursuit: Finding the Quest That Will Bring Purpose to Your Life - Chris Guillebeau
While not your typical travel story, this book is for anyone who asks themselves “What next?” Guillebeau has a revelation that each person is on their own quest. He speaks with a handful of “questers” about how they got started, how much it cost, and what did they learn along the way.
The Bucket List: 1000 Adventures Big & Small - Kath Stathers
Not your typical travel memoir, this book is a great casual read for anyone’s collection. From globetrotters hiking across a border to foodies eating a beignet in New Orleans, this is sure to spark your imagination for wherever you are heading.
Although I've linked the books above, I recommend popping over to IndieBound to find a locally-owned bookstore near you!
Happy Travels, Hannah
